Worms

Worm infestations, often associated with children, can actually affect individuals of any age or gender, with threadworms being the most common culprit. These worms, also known as pinworms, manifest through symptoms like anal itching, disrupted sleep, irritability, fatigue, and occasionally loss of appetite. However, these symptoms may overlap with those of other conditions, and sometimes, threadworm infestations present no symptoms at all, complicating diagnosis.

Various methods can be employed to detect threadworm infestation:

  • Examining feces for visible worms after bowel movements.

  • Observing the worms' movements, which are most noticeable in the morning and appear luminescent under a flashlight.

  • Identifying threadworm eggs around the anus, resembling small white specks.

  • Conducting an adhesive tape test to collect eggs from the anus, which appear as white specks on the tape.

  • Threadworms reside in the intestines, where females lay eggs around the anus, typically at night. Scratching the affected area can transfer eggs to the fingers and under the nails, leading to potential re-infection when ingested. Eggs hatch in the intestine, maturing within weeks and perpetuating the cycle.

Given the ease of transmission within families, treating all members is advisable if one is infested. Pharmacists can provide guidance on treatments and hygiene practices, including laundering bedding, towels, and thorough house cleaning to eliminate threadworms. Maintaining short, clean fingernails and practicing regular handwashing, particularly after using the restroom, changing diapers, and handling food, is essential.

Strict hygiene measures should accompany treatment to prevent re-infestation. Consult with a pharmacist for comprehensive advice on managing threadworm infestations beyond medication alone.
