Your Skin

The skin, our body's largest organ, boasts remarkable versatility and complexity. It's both supple and resilient, allowing freedom of movement while providing essential protection to underlying structures. Sensitivity is another hallmark, enabling us to perceive even the slightest stimuli, with reactions readily apparent.

Functionally, the skin serves as a waterproof barrier, regulates body temperature through sweat, and acts as a sensory organ, transmitting pain, pleasure, temperature, and pressure sensations. Its appearance often reflects overall health, with signs of illness sometimes manifesting first on the skin, such as rashes indicating underlying infections like measles or chickenpox.

Chronic skin conditions like inflammation, eczema, and dermatitis require specialised care, with consultation with a pharmacist recommended for suitable treatments. Soap usage is generally discouraged, and alternatives are available at pharmacies, particularly beneficial for those with skin inflammation.

Rashes can stem from various sources, necessitating proper diagnosis to determine the underlying cause and establish an effective treatment plan. Skin cancer is a significant concern, being the most prevalent form of cancer in Australia, with preventable measures and early detection crucial for reducing mortality rates.

Regular skin self-examination is recommended, utilising a handheld mirror for inspecting hard-to-reach areas like the back, neck, armpits, inner legs, ears, eyelids, hands, feet, fingers, and toes. Any changes in the colour or size of moles, freckles, or spots warrant prompt consultation with a healthcare professional for evaluation and advice.
