Reading Labels

Over-the-counter medications detail their usage instructions on the label, aiding consumers in understanding how to utilise them safely. However, prescription medications, governed by a doctor's guidance, may not have usage instructions on the label. Instead, they list the active ingredients, which help prevent accidental double dosing or adverse interactions with other medications, especially considering individual medical conditions and allergies.

The label also indicates the strength of the medication, which is essential for ensuring the correct dosage, particularly when administering medications to children. It's crucial to choose the appropriate dosage for children and avoid using adult-strength formulations. Different formulations cater to various age groups, such as drops, suspensions, or chewable tablets, ensuring suitability and ease of administration.

Instructions for use provided on the label must be strictly adhered to, with dosages never exceeded. Additionally, batch numbers and supplier details are included on the label, facilitating tracking in case of any issues or concerns.

Medication labelling is governed by national regulations, with most products required to be listed in the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods (ARTG). Products in the ARTG undergo rigorous assessment for safety, quality, and effectiveness. Those labelled AUST R are prescription-only medications and various over-the-counter products, including pain relievers, cough remedies, and antiseptic creams. AUST L medications contain pre-approved low-risk ingredients, suitable for minor health concerns, and are subject to safety and quality reviews.

For comprehensive guidance on medications, it's advisable to consult with a pharmacist. A pharmacist possesses expertise in medications and can offer personalized advice and support.
