Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis, a condition characterised by weakened bone strength and density, heightens the risk of fractures due to increased fragility. It develops when the body loses minerals like calcium at a faster rate than it can replenish them. In Australia alone, an estimated 1.2 million individuals grapple with osteoporosis, often dubbed a "silent disease" as its progression often goes unnoticed until fractures occur. Even minor incidents like a bump or fall can lead to severe fractures as the disease advances.

Several factors contribute to osteoporosis, including age, female gender, family history, low levels of vitamin D and calcium, reduced body weight, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, post-menopausal estrogen decline, and long-term corticosteroid use.

If diagnosed with osteoporosis, your community pharmacist can offer guidance on dietary adjustments, necessary supplements, and suitable exercise routines. They can also provide support and products to aid smoking cessation, while some pharmacies offer bone density screenings to assess osteoporosis risk. In some cases, doctors may prescribe medication to mitigate the risk or progression of osteoporosis, with pharmacists offering advice on usage, potential side effects, and interactions with other medications.

Preventing osteoporosis involves maintaining robust bone health. Concerned individuals should consult their pharmacist, as calcium plays a pivotal role in reducing risk, with recommended daily intakes ranging from 700 to 1300mg depending on age. Dietary sources like dairy products are crucial, although calcium absorption can be hindered by factors such as vitamin D deficiency, excessive caffeine or alcohol consumption, and high soft drink intake. If dietary sources are insufficient, supplements may be recommended, along with strategies to enhance vitamin D levels and calcium absorption. Pharmacists can provide tailored advice on these aspects, review current medications, and suggest appropriate exercises to support bone health.
