Sun Safety

The summer season brings increased sun exposure and outdoor activities, which can elevate the risk of skin damage and potential skin cancer. Australia faces a notably high incidence of skin cancer, ranking among the highest globally, with rates surpassing those of Canada, the United States, and Britain.

Preventing sunburn is paramount, as it accounts for 95% of melanomas. Surprisingly, nearly 14% of adults, 24% of teenagers, and 8% of children experience sunburn during an average summer weekend in Australia. While water sports, beach outings, and outdoor gatherings pose significant risks, even activities like gardening or barbecuing can lead to sunburn. Additionally, sunburn can occur on cooler or overcast days, highlighting the need for ongoing sun protection.

To safeguard against sun damage, it's crucial to adhere to the "slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide" recommendations:

  • Slip on sun-protective clothing.

  • Slop on broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF30+ sunscreen.

  • Slap on a hat to shield the face, head, neck, and ears.

  • Seek shade whenever possible.

  • Slide on sunglasses that meet Australian standards to protect your eyes.

Despite the straightforward nature of these guidelines, choosing the right sun protection products can be daunting. Community pharmacists and their teams offer invaluable advice on selecting appropriate sunscreen formulations tailored to specific needs and conditions. They can also provide guidance on proper product usage.

Community pharmacies are also well-equipped to address concerns regarding skin health. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing skin cancer, underscoring the importance of recognising changes in your skin's appearance. Look for signs such as non-healing sores, unusual lumps, or alterations in moles' colour, size, or shape over time.

If you notice any concerning changes, don't hesitate to consult your community pharmacist or doctor promptly. Pharmacists are trained to recognise potential issues and will refer you to a doctor for further evaluation if necessary, ensuring timely intervention and care.
