Keeping Medicines Safe

Many of the medications we rely on come with instructions to store them below specific temperatures. This precaution is crucial because some medications lose their potency when exposed to temperatures exceeding this minimum, while others may undergo changes in consistency, making them challenging to use.

For instance, gel capsules might soften, creams and ointments could become watery, and suppositories may melt altogether. While short-term exposure to elevated temperatures might not greatly affect medications for acute conditions, prolonged exposure in consistently hot climates requires careful storage in the coolest and safest environment possible.

Consulting with your pharmacist about refrigerating your medications is advisable. Bathrooms, prone to heat and humidity fluctuations, are unsuitable for storing medications. Always refer to the label and Consumer Medicine Information (CMI) leaflet for specific storage instructions, and don't hesitate to discuss any concerns with your pharmacist.

In general, it's best to store medications away from heat, moisture, and sunlight, ideally below 25°C. Avoid leaving them in warm spots like windowsills, where temperatures can soar.

While most medications should not be refrigerated, exceptions include certain liquid medications and injection vials if indicated on the label. However, freezing medications renders them unstable and unusable. When traveling in hot weather, ensuring proper medication storage becomes even more critical, particularly for those with chronic illnesses like diabetes or heart disease, where compromised medication can lead to severe consequences.

If you suspect your medication has been exposed to higher temperatures than recommended, promptly consult your pharmacist to assess its viability and safety.
